An Epitaph in Rust was the NESFA Press book for Boskone XXVI by Guest of Honor Tim Powers. It was originally published by Laser Books in November 1976 (as Epitaph in Rust by Timothy Powers, #47, ISBN: 0-373-72047-125, 190pp., $1,25, cover by Frank Kelly Freas). This corrected edition also includes an introduction by the author and an essay on the novel and Laser Books by Boskone Special Speaker Tom Whitmore. The cover is by Official Artist James Gurney. An Epitaph in Rust follows young Thomas from his escape from a rural monestary into the wilds of a future Los Angeles. There he joins a theater company where the play is definitely not the thing—revolution is—and he finds himself in the middle of it. The mayor has been blown up and his android guards are determined to end insurrection. But the theater company has other ideas....

Tim Powers has been writing SF novels since the mid '70s. His first two novels, The Skies Discrowned and An Epitaph in Rust, were published by Laser Books. The Drawing of the Dark, a delightfully original Arthurian fantasy, in which beer plays a major role in saving the world, appeared in 1979. He made a major impression on the field with the 1983 publication of The Anubis Gates, a complicated timetravel tale which founded a new school of fantasy: "steampunk." The Anubis Gates as well as his next novel, Dinner at Deviant's Palace, won Philip K. Dick Memorial Awards as the best paperback original of the year. His next book, On Stranger Tides, was an inventive fantasy combining voodoo, pirates, and the Royal Navy. Tim lives with his wife Serena in California.
