A book review by Elisabeth Carey
Tiffany Aching meets Winter. Also Summer, but it’s Winter who causes all the excitement, when he gets infatuated with Tiffany, and sets about trying to make himself human in order to be with her. And makes an ice palace for her to live in. All of which might be fine, except that it means Winter’s full force is focused tightly on Tiffany’s part of the Discworld, and isn’t planning to leave.
The unfortunate meeting with Winter happens when Tiffany’s current tutor, Miss Treason, takes her to the midwinter Dance of the Seasons, and Tiffany unwisely jumps into the empty space in the Dance. Now she’s stuck with the task of undoing the inconvenient effects of her mistake. But just in case she should get bored with so little to occupy her, she also has to cope with the death of Miss Treason, Annagramma Hawkins’ total unpreparedness for taking over Miss Treason’s responsibilities in her village, Roland’s alarming mention of some other girl’s watercolors, the use and operation of the Summer Lady’s cornucopia, and the enthusiastic help of the Nac Mac Feegles. Great fun, as always!
Recommended.
