coverArtemis Fowl

by Eoin Colfer

A book review by Mark L. Olson

Hyperion, 2001, 277 pp, $16.95

This is a piece of schlock designed to cash in on the Harry Potter craze.

Artemis Fowl is a super-bright kid from a Irish criminal family which used to be rich but has fallen on hard times. He is using his extreme brilliance and very talented servants to steal gold from the fairies.

The fairies, it seems, have recently developed a high technology as they hid out from Mankind deep in the Earth's mantle -- that's along with their native magic.

The story is a bastard mixture of magic and technology and spy-thriller which leaps from implausibility to absurdity. The combination of fairy magic and high technology lets the author pull whatever he or she wants to out of his or her hat.
