Guest of Honor: David Gerrold
David Gerrold is one of the few authors who have been successful in both the literary and media areas of science fiction. He started writing professionally in 1967 with the “Trouble with Tribbles” episode of Star Trek. Within five years, he had published seven novels, two books about television production, three anthologies, and a short story collection. He has been nominated multiple times for the Hugo and Nebula awards. Since 1967, he has published more than forty books, including classics like The Man Who Folded Himself, and When HARLIE Was One.
Gerrold has written episodes for over a dozen different television series, including Star Trek, Star Trek Animated, Twilight Zone, Land of the Lost, Babylon 5, Sliders, Logan's Run, and Tales From The Darkside. He has had columns in six different magazines and two websites, including Starlog, Galileo, Profiles, PC-Techniques, Visual Developer, Yahoo, and GalaxyOnline. In 1995, he won the Hugo and Nebula for “The Martian Child,” an auto-biographical tale of his son's adoption.
Official Artist: Gary A. Lippincott
Our Official Artist, Gary Lippincott has always been interested in fantasy and imagination—background, buildings, creatures. He uses his talent to bring his concepts to the viewer. His specialty is fantasy but he has also done science fiction and children's books. He started working in oils but later moved to the more delicate and difficult watercolors. Some of the books he has illustrated include The Vampire's Beautiful Daughter and Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher. He has produced art for the Science Fiction Book Club, Houghton-Mifflin, Realms of Fantasy, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, and Harcourt & Co.
He graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art, receiving his BFA degree. In addition to painting he has taught at the Worcester Art Museum. He has exhibited at Arts Worcester, University of Massachusetts Medical, Bush Galleries, Cambridge Gallery, Southbridge Center for the Arts, Spencer Arts Center, Northampton Center for the Arts, and the Words and Pictures Museum.
Special Guest: Brother Guy Consolmagno, SJ, PhD
Our Special Guest is the famed astronomer Br. Guy Consolmagno. Guy is currently a Vatican astronomer splitting his time between Castel Gandolfo and Tucson, Arizona; he's also Curator of the Vatican Meteorite Collection. His research explores connections between meteorites, asteroids, and the evolution of small solar system bodies, observing Kuiper Belt comets with the Vatican's 1.8-meter telescope in Arizona. For his work he was honored by having asteroid 4597 named for him. This asteroid at 2.6 AU is about 20 km wide.
He has served on the governing boards of the Meteoritical Society, is past president of the International Astronomical Union, Commission 16 (Planets and Satellites) and Secretary of Division III (Planetary Systems Sciences); and presently serves as chair of the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society. He currently holds the Loyola Chair for visiting Jesuit scholars at Fordham University, Bronx, New York. In addition to more than 100 scientific publications, he has written four books, including Brother Astronomer: Adventures of a Vatican Scientist. He is a former active member of the MIT Science Fiction Society.
Featured Filker: Lee & Barry Gold
Lee and Barry Gold have been mainstays of filk for many years. Lee is the publisher of Xenofilkia, a filkzine which has appeared every two months with clockwork regularity since 1988, as well as the occasional filkzine Filker Up. In addition to publishing the songs of others, Lee has written many songs of her own. She also produces the roleplaying APA Alarums and Excursions, which was started in 1975 and has missed only one issue since then, and has written a number of professionally published roleplaying products.
Barry is Lee's performing voice, as well as performing songs by others. He has been heard on nationwide radio on Sound and Spirit. He maintains the Xenofilkia homepage. A professional web page designer, he maintains the ConChord website. He is an excellent amateur cook and a role-playing gamer.
