coverA Walking Tour of the Shambles

by Gene Wolfe and Neil Gaiman

A book review by Mark L. Olson

American Fantasy, 2002, $15.00, 57 pp

I believe that this chapbook was published for the most recent Chicago World Fantasy Convention and it’s a minor delight. The Shambles is a Lovecraftian Chicago neighborhood into which only the stout of soul dare venture. Wolfe and Gaiman have written a tourist book – supposedly volume #16 of the Little Walks for Sightseers series – about it.

It’s darkly funny, well written (and how not with those two as authors?) and illustrated by Edward Gorey. My only complaint is that it the book is poorly made and pages started falling out almost immediately.
